Rayvon Owen Rejects Regret on "Do It Again"

Rayvon Owen's latest track proves that it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Though it's been almost a year since the Virginia singer released his previous EP Las Virginia, Owen returns full force this week with a video for his latest single "Do it Again." Alone in a sparsely decorated apartment, Owen showcases his soft and dulcet tones while reflecting on a relationship that may be nearing its end. Whether or not he is alone mourning his relationship, however, is unknown.

Despite the uneasiness and tension within Rayvon Owen's lyrics, "Do It Again" is ultimately a sweet and sentimental ballad. The track's soft piano arpeggios start softly, but quickly swell as Owen sings "Feel like this is the end / And if it's the end / Would you do it all over again?" on the chorus. The mix is simultaneously minimal and cinematic, haunting and romantic, saccharine and melancholic - perfectly capturing the nervousness around the end of a relationship. It is clear that Owen has cherished his time with whomever he is addressing, but all he wants to know is if they feel the same. Though Owen does not regret love's intoxicating highs, his anxiety still bleeds through his writing when singing "I feel like I'm on top with you baby / But a side of me is scared that you hate me."

Though 2021 has been a wild ride so far, "Do It Again" is another emotional rollercoaster we should all hop on. Both the single and the video reflect the maddening pitfalls of self-doubt and fear when a treasured love reaches its natural conclusion, as even when powerless, Owen still can't hope but ask if his partner would "Do it again." Rayvon Owen's mastery of pop and R&B is clear in his vocal performance, and you may catch yourself playing this track more than just a few times. If "Do It Again" is any indication of things to come, it may be fair to say that hopefully Rayvon Owens releases more music sooner rather than later.
