Greentea Peng's "Look To Him" Is Pure Poetry in Motion

Greentea Peng is not to be imitated, though it’d be impossible to replicate an artist so one of one.

A jazz-infused declaration of sovereignty, the UK-based artist's latest single “Look To Him” is soul-illuminating. She surrenders to the divine grand scheme while maintaining firm in her own power, and it’s infectious. Greentea Peng effortlessly commands attention, not because she begs for it with antics but stands grounded in her truth, with little dilution and full discernment.

“Look To Him”  is no solo feat, a collaborative effort with St Francis Hotel, the mastermind behind production for the likes of Portugal, The Man and Michael Kiwanuka. It’d be shapeless without the horns of Hanna Mbuya and Callum Connell, among many more talented instrumentalists, birthing a track that feels timeless.

But though its trance-like rhythm is captivating, the meat of this song lies truly in its lyrics. She invites us in for a moment of poignant reflection, asking ourselves which limitations are self-imposed and where we live in false ownership. Admiring this song is like absorbing any work of art, knowing what you interpret will taste different than what someone else does, but that’s the whole point.

Greentea Peng is pure poetry in motion and her music is her sap. There’s no over-extending in her celebrity; she offers a piece of herself, lets the work speak for itself, and returns back to living life in healthy soil. Easing out the track with the words “If you gotta force it, then you know it ain’t happening,” she leaves us with a humbling truth to marinate on: where are you exhausting effort when you really could just surrender?
